Okay I'm assuming that we are taking a "every person for themselves" approach to feeding ourselves out on the playa. It does make sense since not everyone has the same diet needs, or preferences, but it would be nice to have some kind of cooking plan for those who are interested in cooking for others or those who are just interested in eating others food :P
Are there any plans like this in the work?
I just made my self hungry I’m gonna go grab a sandwich now :)

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 12:05 PMAs long as Iron Rose has been in existence, it's been a consensus that "community kitchen = DrrrrRAMA!"
We usually have a spontaneous meal together and that's usually on Sunday. :P

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 1:33 PMThere is nothing to prevent you from getting together with others to cook if that is what you want to do but it is pretty much a clear part of our camp culture that their is no planning or organizing of any food related stuff at the camp level. You might want to go to the yahoo group and look through previous threads on this subject to get a better feel for things.
About the only things organized at the camp level are communal shade, the pots/showers, juke joint, and some of the activities we put on for the community. In general we are a "you are responsible for your own experience" group and that extends to your provisions for the week.
My "mess free" cooking is also ice free ... I generally have eaten out of cans for the week. No refrigeration, no food poisoning, and while it isn't exactly gourmet cuisine, this is extreme desert camping, not a holiday at the Ritz for me. Having said all that, Wendy loves to cook and so I will probably be doing some non-canned stuff this year.
Grease can go in the burn barrel, left over meat can get nasty as can certain vegi matter, use onion bags to desiccate it and then burn it. I was in a camp with a central kitchen some years ago and just the amount of food wast was huge. We had nearly an entire evap pond filled with desiccating food and then someone would toss in gray water and it soon became a slime pit and it started stinking and stuff. -

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 1:43 PMI did want to note that while we don't have any central planning in provisions, we are not strict individualists and have had some quite amazing group eating of the "stone soup" sort where various people have brought a large quantity of something to share or we have pitched in what we have left at the end of the week for a feed.
Last year we had meat cooked over the burn barrels after setup and a great post-burn Sunday morning breakfast in the Juke Joint that just sort of happened. And there was Gerry's otter pops that were all the rage as the Bluegrass Jam was winding down. So what we do is tend to offer our campmates an unexpected treat rather than have a lot of expectations and planning and stuff involved with a lot of planned meals. There is no expectation that anyone bring things to share and no requirement to do so and so when it happens, it tends to be somewhat of a bonding experience where we become companions in the desert. -

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 1:56 PMI'm going to coming from Washington DC and I won't have any kitchen/camping stove-type stuff. Is anyone interested in sharing their kitchen/cooking stuff? I would happily kick in extra food/wash dishes, whatever! -

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 2:03 PMBacon is always, always a good food for the playa--a salty, hot protein injection.
Roses (the playa kind) love bacon and Heidi introduced us to spack (sp?) last year--it's bread fried in bacon fat and sprinkled with powdered sugar or just plop a dollop of maple syrup on it. It's LNT/green food!
I usually take the usual suggested food--Tasty Bites, tuna in a bag, chili in boxes, smoked meat sticks of some kind. Last year, I brought a camping stove and didn't need to use it at all (thank you ,Wendy).
Fresh veggies are always good for the first few days. Kam brings hard boiled eggs.
I suggest that you find something that you enjoy cooking and bring a lot of it to share if that's what you have mind. Sometimes the best kind of treats/food are items that you don't need to cook.
I wish I was going to the playa! And I'm hungry! :)
Joe, sorry if this didn't help at all--I'm too busy enjoying playa flashbacks to be helpful and coherent.

One of the little moments I remember from last year was sharing my canned asparagus with Heidi. She looked a little tuckered and when she ate it, her face lit up and it just made my day.
in addition to the Indian markets, check out the Asian markets too. They have a lot of rather exotic dried and canned foods that keep well. The Ranch 99 chain of asian supermarkets in the bay area is a treasure trove of stuff for BM. And two years ago I found canned stuffed green peppers at a Big Lots store. So you can find interesting, non-dull things in cans if you look. The asian jerkeys are cool too. They come in many different varieties.

Re: 2007 food plan?
Sat, June 23, 2007 - 11:31 PM(and shit)
See, the phrase "and shit" is like a post-modern "amen". In fact, I really would like to have a Saturday morning ritual out by the man where I make the sun rise. We will have "communion" about 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise and then I will give a few stories and lessons and then a sermon and finally raise the Sun. At at various intervals, when I have said something particularly pause-worthy, the crowd (well, maybe there wont be a CROWD but I might gather a few disciples) will murmur "and shit". I should probably ask Gigsville if I can use the name "Church of Holy Fucking Shit" since that hasn't been out there for a while. And then we all march in procession back to the juke joint for weird fellowship. Need some brightly colored flags for standard bearers to carry to lead the procession I guess.

Fri, June 22, 2007 - 5:01 PMBacon and cheese quesadillas at 3am can't be beat! I also had one cooler of dry ice and brought frozen steaks and brats which were nice to grill.

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 5:15 PMI usually bring a 7cu ft chest freezer with me, but not this year.
BUT, if somebody ELSE wants to haul it, I'd be more than happy to lend it to you. It's great for keeping most everything usually way to cold (frozen eggs and milk, oops!), but it can be a lovely treat when you pull out the ice cream or Otter Pops on Saturday.
Load it up about a week or two in advance with gallon jugs of OJ, mixers, Otter Pops, cook-and-freeze-in-advance food and let everything get really good and frozen. As you take stuff out, add blocks of ice from Artica. The thermal mass will help keep things cold. Later in the week after you used most of the stuff, it get much harder to keep stuff frozen.
Like I said, if somebody else wants to haul it, let me know. You too can know the joy of giving Otter Pops to 1000 of your new closest friends! (it's FUN!)

Re: 2007 food plan?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 8:32 PM"I usually take the usual suggested food--Tasty Bites, tuna in a bag, chili in boxes, "
when i first read this, i read it as 'tasty bites, tuna in a bag, child in boxes'
whoo. i need a nap.
i usually do a big breakfast. i love the pre-shredded potatoes for ease, cooked in leftover bacon grease with some eggs and bacon. or some andouille sausage, a good way to start the day. i don't often do lunch there, if i do, it's something really easy, like hummus, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, dolmas, and olives, but dinner, i like something hot-pasta, chili, quesadillas if i'm feeling a bit ambitious.
convenience foods are good to have-prewashed veggies, pre-shredded cheese, etc.
i LOVE salt and vinegar chips when i'm there, as well as salami and cheese straight outta the bag.
and like geekster said, if you want to cook, there will be plenty of folks to share with. i often cook extra with the intent of sharing, and if none of the other roses want it, there's likely to be somebody in the juke joint who will.
